WHY only idiots invest in football nowadays

Football is a financial megabeast. The biggest clubs are worth well over a billion euros, and make hundreds of millions in revenues every year. So it should be easy for investors to make money, right? Well…no. The industry is already packed full of billionaires, and even whole countries, who are ready to blow stacks of cash for the chance to make it to the top. And with costs spiralling, and potentially hostile fans, there are more risks than you might think. So is betting big on a football club a fool’s errand? Tell us what you think in the comments. We take a closer look…

All clubs should be member-owned. Only way to save modern football – democratic accountability. Our sport is not some rich guy’s toy or a PR-show for a country. Football is for the fans.

I really feel like Football is in for a crisis that will define it for the next 100 years. Chelsea is potentially going to crumble. Letting these huge money interests in has made lots of people lots of money but the money won’t last for ever.

Youf have to be billionaire billionaire. Like 20B.

  12. Anthony Villanueva Torres on April 4, 2022 at 7:58 pm

The problem with a lot of these owners in the EPL it’s quite obvious they don’t have a clue about soccer nor do they hire people experts who can run the Soccer side for them. Man United is the perfect example, they hire an account to be their director of football which is stupid. Ed Woodward is obviously very good at the financial part of the team as despite their lack of success the team is still making massive profits from marketing and sponsors but football wise he’s not very bright. And that’s okay, because that’s why you hire an expert in soccer for that role. Let Woodward do his job and get someone else to do the parts that he’s not an expert in.

Although liverpool are in debt the system fsg has implemented since taking over has saved us from liquidation. The club is now self sufficient and the debt being paid back to fsg is interest free as they’ll make enough profit off of it. I know they have their issues but there’s no such thing as an all tound good owner anymore. I’d rather have fsg with their smart approach than go the leeds and rangers route.

Meanwhile investing in MLS is the hottest move in the market. I know y’all are/gnna laugh but soccer/futbol in America, especially the MLS, is growing rapidly. Even USL is coming up…

Just a big hedge for some of these billionaires. Pif just need to put there money somewhere with diversification

  35. Abheek Dasgupta on April 4, 2022 at 8:26 pm

If I were a genuine billionaire businessman, the only reason I’d invest in European football is if I’m buying a lower league team and I have a strong analytics team that can help me find bargains. Big clubs would have fans expecting me to spend hundreds of millions to match the oil states, which is a no.

Also, other sports are offering better financial opportunities for investors. The American leagues and the IPL are much better deals coz no relegation and there’s a salary cap to control spending.

Football clubs is all about ‘History, Fans, Trophies and Positive projects’ not who owns it. That’s why Barcelona will always remain one of the best till the end.

  40. jtjr26 on April 4, 2022 at 8:30 pm

You can’t do anything about the billionaire owners. Given the value of teams in the tops tiers of the English football pyramid and elsewhere, no one else can afford them. I do think there should be some rules or even perhaps a law that outlaws a leveraged buyout of a team. If someone wants to buy a team then let them do it out of their own pocket or take a personal loan.

You can easily afford a football club in Eastern Europe for a couple million euros. So no bro, its not out of the possibility. You just need to be realistic.
