What is a Domain Name and How Does it Work?
First steps toward installing and setting up a self-hosted WordPress blog are:
1. Making a decision about a domain name (or URL — Unique Resource Locator)
2. Purchasing the registration of that name through a domain registrar
What is a Domain Name?
A domain name is the unique web address that you type in your web browser’s address bar in Firefox, Google Chrome, or Opera to visit a web site. An example of a domain name is:
www.alekstanojevic.com
I emphasize the word unique because no two domain names can be the same. If someone else has registered the domain name you want, you can’t have it. With that in mind, it sometimes takes a bit of time to find a domain that isn’t already in use and is available for you to use.
It is preferable to register a domain name with a .com extension over the other extensions, but if you are unfortunate enough to have a reasonably common name, then the .com option may not be available, even if you put a hyphen (-) in between your first and last names.
Do you own or rent a Domain Name?
In reality, when you ‘buy’ a domain name, you don’t really own it you’re purchasing the right to use that domain name for the period of time specified in your order. You can register a domain name for one year or up to ten years.
Domain Name Extensions
When you register your domain name, you’re asked to choose the extension you want for your domain. Just because you have registered your domain as a .com doesn’t mean that someone else doesn’t, or can’t, own the very same domain name with a .net.
The cost of a domain name
When you pay the domain registration fee today, you need to pay another registration fee when the renewal date comes up again in a year, or two, or five — how many years you chose to register your domain name for.
How much does a domain name cost per year?
The usual price for a .com domain name is about $10 per year.
Registering a domain name
Domain registrars are companies that sells domain names. They must be certified and approved by ICANN Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers. No matter where you choose to register your domain name, here are the steps you can take to accomplish this task:

Thanks a lot for this helpful and informative video. Now, my question is: why we pay money for the domain name?
Thank You
As i can understand first I need to buy a domain name for some cost as well as some extension domain if I want. If I register for some extension like .net .org. etc along with my main domain .com, DO i need to pay for all these domain name (i.e. xxxyz.com, xxxyz.net, xxxyz.org) for every year (Having said I know I have to pay for xxxyz.com every year )
