The Rise Of Open-Source Software

Open-source software powers nearly all the world’s major companies. This software is freely available, and is developed collaboratively, maintained by a broad network that includes everyone from unpaid volunteers to employees at competing tech companies. Here’s how giving away software for free has proven to be a viable business model.

  5. Schmetter Ling on July 30, 2021 at 9:23 pm

That’s what they keep telling me, but the truth is that I still don’t use any open source software. I use licensed software and freeware, but nothing that comes even close to open source.

  6. Bobby Bob on July 30, 2021 at 9:23 pm

The momentous field lally bow because front numerically share inside a faded invention. lumpy, mere sentence

  7. Hlib Borysov on July 30, 2021 at 9:25 pm

IBM bought Red Hat, not vice versa. Think about it. Open-source didn’t win, instead they took advantage of it.

  8. Lakshmanan Kannan on July 30, 2021 at 9:26 pm

    Great

  11. hbarudi on July 30, 2021 at 9:28 pm

If microsoft bought github, and know open source is better, when can we get access to see the code in Windows including the latest updates and to see what the computer does when it keeps loading forever from turning on the computer until we see the desktop icons, taskbar, and mouse cursor? Even with faster ssd computer takes about a minute to load and on hard drive about 10 minutes or more and especially the windows update that takes a very long time to load I want to know that code behind such things.

  12. Victor Zhuravlyov on July 30, 2021 at 9:29 pm

Dislike. Because Linux is not an operating system – it’s a kernel. You should say GNU/Linux!

  13. Thakgalo Melvin on July 30, 2021 at 9:32 pm

Open source sounds like out-sourcing to me. "people who have received compensation through the labour of their tenants" they must just be paid by the users profiting I say it’s as simple as that

Open sourcing software source code and now even infrastructure is revolutionary. One can learn and implement technologies that took millions of dollars and decades of research by one of the best brains in the world, sitting at home, for absolutely free.

  20. DAVID LEAMAN on July 30, 2021 at 9:42 pm

I’m sure this is at the base of the argument that China is stealing intellectual property. They are taking what they have learned from working at some big tech manufacturing company and then creating something new from that knowledge and recycled parts..

  21. Maya Ibuki on July 30, 2021 at 9:43 pm

The only reason open-source is rising is because every company and corporation wants to use the projects for free and put a price tag, example, amazon docker, intel and amd psp and ime, etc.

  22. TechYTainment on July 30, 2021 at 9:45 pm

That’s why in the ancient India, education and it’s related resources are free for all over the world. And now we’re realising why it was!

I can die proudly knowing that I have improved my children’s, & humanities lives. Now, with all these contributions, we can push the growth & evolution into becoming an interplanetary species. Open source software actually came before proprietary software, developers freely passed code around, before companies tried to lock their code down to make profit.

  43. Timmy on July 30, 2021 at 10:05 pm

5:47 – This unprofessional quick and dirty duct-tape methodology of slapping together stuff, often used by big corporations, is the reason I prefer Open-Source.
No real developer would accept a proprietary slapped together dish of spaghetti code, which I often refer to as crap-ware…

  44. Captain G on July 30, 2021 at 10:06 pm

open source was one of the best things to happen to humanity

  46. Phil Prtn on July 30, 2021 at 10:10 pm

A mix of "open-source" that might be copyrighted and licensed and paid for without rights to modify it in any way (Windows was offered on open-source for some governments, while copyrighted and nnon-modifiable), with "free software" that Stallman is defending, is at least misleading if not totally wrong. NGinX story explains it all.
Notice that in my example of Windows being offered open-source to some governments and agency, this is still proprietary software, licensed and non-modifiable.

Free software is totally different. Free software is what the society at large needs.
Linux and GNU are free software. Windows was at some point Open-Source. See the difference!

  47. QuiChiYang2 on July 30, 2021 at 10:10 pm

From the beginning days of open source the commodity software base model weeds out the bogus stuff out there in the internet. Knowledge is open not closed. I still see my code working just fine out here.

Thanks to open-source, green hand can learn from big company directly.

  50. Timmy on July 30, 2021 at 10:12 pm

Open-source is where real innovation happens, then corporations (such as Apple) use (sometimes steal) those ideas as there own.
