Thanks Aivars for bringing this up. People have also shared some important points in the comments. Career in IT is such a complex equation with lots of factors and existing trend influencing the final decision. How long someone can make cakes when every customer in the neighbourhood is running for pizzas. And God knows what will be in demand after they fed up eating pizzas.

I think the most important answer is "it depends".
It depends where you live, it depends where you think you will find your customers and it depends on the industry and it depends on the size of the company you’re going to work for. And any combination. It also depends if you’re specializing (e.g. native 3D game development for iOS vs. commercial hybrid app development), which will narrow down your niche you’re into, but also might give you the chance to build up a better profile and eventually get paid better.

I have been working in an IT company for several years as a system administrator. I maintain optical networks and everything that goes with it, but I started learning Swift a few months ago. I bought a Mac mini and started learning because I want to make apps. By the way, next year I will be 40 years old. 🙂
