Lesson 4: Adding A Domain Name To Your Website

In the last lesson, you added a form to your website to capture site visitor data and follow up with them. In today’s lesson, we’re going to be covering how to add a domain name to your site.

Your domain name is your unique address on the web. People will type your web address into their browser to find your website. This is usually in the form of a dot com, dot net, dot org, or another domain extension.

If you’re currently on a WebStarts free plan, you have a free WebStarts web address, but to be taken seriously you really need to establish your brand with your own domain name.

At WebStarts there are two types of domain names you can add to your website…

A new domain name → 0:21

A new domain name is one that’s not currently registered. To add a new domain to your website, all you need to do is select your domain name, upgrade your plan, and it will be working with your site after about thirty seconds.

Practice Skill: From the Dashboard, click on the Add Domain button. The Add A New Domain option will be selected by default. Type a desired domain name into the field and click Search to check to see if it’s available to register.

An existing domain name → 0:39

An existing domain name is one that’s already been registered. To use a domain that’s been registered, you must have control over the domain, upgrade your plan, and then change the domain name servers to:

You do this by logging into the account where you originally registered your domain name. You then find where to manage the name servers for that domain and update them.

You’re doing great. You’ve already moved through four lessons. Tomorrow I’ll be teaching you what you need to know about Search Engine Optimization. Stay tuned…
