Intel Processor names & Suffixes Explained!

Intel Processor names & Suffixes Explained!

Professor steve is here to demystify intel naming. Don’t miss this chance to learn something.

Today we’re here to help you understand the way Intel names their Processors line up!

Cheat Sheet:
i7-8700K

[ i7 ]- This is the brand modifier.

[ |8|700 ] The first number is the generation indicator. So this one is 8th gen!

[ 8 | 700 | ] The 700 – is the SKU

[K] Then we have the SUFFIX – This is the products indicator of a special feature. There are processors without any suffix and some with a Suffix.

I can’t wait for you to do this explanation and comparison for the AMD series. Also for us dummies that have been thinking of a duel Processor the Xeon and comparable AMD processors. I’m just trying to figure out the best way to build a Graphics and Video computer that isn’t unstable when there are many different screen redraws going from file to file with customers waiting to make changes. I know I sound like an idiot but there was discontinued duel processor mother board and 2 Xeon processors I was looking at seriously last year, the specifications were fantastic. But because it was older I couldn’t get anyone that understood what I wanted it for. Anyway Learning is such a big curve for some of us.

Just picked up the i7 8700 for $420, 8700k is pushing $490 can’t decide if I want to kick in the extra $70 or $110 for the 9700k @$530???

I could spend it, but is it worth it?
    Wish I could find a sale on a 9700k!

Also I think you are wrong about the i7 and i9. I do not think there as good for gaming as the i5. Hyper-threading or multi threading is not a major factor in fps. And it is shown that the i5 out matches the other two processors with its 6 core / 12 thread architecture.

    My man forgot the Xeon, Core M series, and the processor that is in every school Chromebook;

    The legendary Celeron.

  22. Lukiel666 on March 7, 2021 at 1:04 am

Woah hold on there; matching up socket # is a way to go wrong. I have a Z270 board thus socket LGA 1151. I have a Kaby Lake G4600 Pentium. Which is 7th gen despite starting with 4. But if I try to put an 8th gen Coffee lake in it which is also LGA 1151 it will not work. I would need a Z370 board.
The Z370 boards have a warning on them 8th gen only. So if I bought one of them, an LGA 1151 board my current G4600 will not work in it. Despite both board and processor being LGA 1151!

  26. Juan F. Valdivieso on March 7, 2021 at 1:09 am

Do you guys know any information on the intel F series?

I always use Memory Express for my custom builds. Reliable decent prices and promotions and good customer service

  30. Warped Vision PC on March 7, 2021 at 1:14 am

Ok so you kinda skip over alot of information after the non suffix chips should have been the "F" series because when you want just a little more power you can get it with the understanding it has no onboard graphics but includes stock cooler perfect for starter gamer builds. Then when you go into the "K" series of chips you need to make it clear there is no cooler with it and one must be purchased not just implied by the upgraded cooler comment. I also think it could be better explained why you need one motherboard vs the other depending on the suffix and socket cpu you are choosing and why you would want that board, including some of there features.

    I got an I7 9700K

  32. Gregory Martin on March 7, 2021 at 1:16 am

Would have been nice to know what a skew is SKU? Right? No? I guess I’ll have to Google it.
Unless it just means stock keeping unit. Which would have been easy for you to say.

  33. Wayne S on March 7, 2021 at 1:17 am

I was out of the PC game for many years (the last rig I had built was a Pentium Pro). Got back into it a few years ago, but man did I ever have to spend a lot of time researching Intel to figure out what was what. I had no idea what their naming scheme was or what I should be looking for. Had the same problem with GPUs too 🙂

  34. Daniel Bromberg on March 7, 2021 at 1:17 am

    What is SKU?

    Good video. Decent simplification.

  39. Pi on March 7, 2021 at 1:21 am

I like how he keeps saying "prOcessor"… with a long O vowel sound. I suppose it does make him stand out from the mainstream PC tech reviewers. Although now that I think about, maybe his pronunciation is intentional… as a way of trolling us? Or maybe he is Canadian? Either way, it’s pretty funny. Good job explaining the Intel CPU naming scheme.
