I have a question about step 2 and 3. How I can properly combine the interaction between Distrokid and BMI? I mean if I want to use both services, I register my tracks on BMI and set 200% since i’m an independent artist and i dont have any deals and contracts with any label. But at the same time I want to use Distrokid service just as a distributor, not as a label. So legally i’m still an independent artist but Distrokid creates pages on other digital platforms like Spotify etc. So legally Distrokid may act (???) as a publisher. Do i need to correct percentage amount on ownership in step 3 or not? Could you please explain me that moment, cause BMI FAQ has not discovered it completely?

  8. Olga Nellis on February 15, 2021 at 5:28 am

What do you mean by “samples”?

  9. Ryan Utterback on February 15, 2021 at 5:28 am

Do you need to do this if you sign up for a publishing admin like songtrust or do they register the song with BMI etc.?

  16. Bad Hombre on February 15, 2021 at 5:32 am

Question…As a hip hop producer I use my samples from Splice and their fine print states that there samples are royalty free. That being said, I can select yes and be okay?

  17. Jude Schroter on February 15, 2021 at 5:32 am

If I don’t live in the US… But my country is one of BMI’s affiliates… Will I still receive my royalties?

  18. Azim Starr on February 15, 2021 at 5:33 am

This is very helpful but you can’t just say don’t use samples when a lot of people do. What do you suggest if you are using samples?

  27. sevenfourtyseven on February 15, 2021 at 5:44 am

Now how to copyright a song

  28. Andrew DeJesus on February 15, 2021 at 5:44 am

So does BMI get a cut of the publishing then? You said they “capture” the publishing. So is the song then captive to BMI as far as the other 100% of the publishing royalties? And if so shouldn’t we create our own publishing LLC before anything?

  29. Frontier Music on February 15, 2021 at 5:49 am

We have songs released on all digital platforms. But we also have a few music videos of these songs posted on YouTube as well. Should we register music videos on BMI as well? Or does one song registration with BMI cover for that song’s music video as well?
