How Do Domains Work?

How Do Domains Work?

[http://blue.host/wOJT305kY7q] Have you ever wondered how domains work? You just type in a bunch of letters, hit enter, and, bam, a website appears! But how? You’re going to learn right now in less than 60 seconds.

The story of domains starts with IP addresses. IP addresses are what make communication between two devices possible. Just like you have a home address, computers use IP addresses to communicate with each other.

When you type in a domain at the top of your browser, that domain is actually linked with an IP address. Your browser searches through the Domain Name System, which is essentially a phone book for IP addresses and their corresponding domain names.

Once your browser finds the right address, it’s able to communicate with the server that’s hosting the site you want to visit. Your browser takes that information from the server — the files, images, and HTML code — and converts it into a website you can actually see and use.

Great, short video! I like to use the analogy of a phone number instead of a street address when talking about IPs. Seems to make a lot of sense to people. 😉
How about a video on MX Records and/or mail servers?

I just had a problem with Bluehost. They are usually great with tech support. That is why main reason. However, they screwed me in my domain name and after all I went through they not only lied to me in saying the domain name I chose was fine, but now that Bluehost won’t except the extension I chose. They won’t make it right and told me sorry wish we could do more. I lost out on my money and now am out money because their tech support is trash. Not just from what they did to me, but I mentioned this on FB and a lot of people I guess are having issues with their support team. They changed…in a bad way… Just watch your backs.
