Haven’t tried this yet as i have access for a time to a smtp relay, but I’m wondering if there’s a place in gmail acct to add spf, dkim, and dmarc records. You can on cloudflare sure, but might also need the info in the headers in the mail sent from gmail to "maybe help" with some of the delivery problems. You would need to know the ip range google could use to send, but thats prob available.

Brilliant! Inspires me to get off my backside and sort out this kind of stuff!
I got stuck at one point…..Worth pointing out that you won’t see the "App password" option at all if you don’t have "two step verification" set up…. As I didn’t! On to the next one!

Hmm i dont seem to be able to get the mx records to work with this. i have a domain in fasthosts and use cloudflare as a reverse proxy.
i get to the point where i get an confirmation email but that says (failiure).

DNS Error: 3634554 DNS type ‘mx’ lookup of responded with code NOERROR 3634554 DNS type ‘mx’ lookup of had no relevant answers. 3634554 DNS type ‘aaaa’ lookup of responded with code NOERROR 3634554 DNS type ‘aaaa’ lookup of had no relevant answers. 3634554 DNS type ‘a’ lookup of responded with code NOERROR 3634554 DNS type ‘a’ lookup of had no relevant answers.

any help with this would be appreciated 🙂

    update: now i get

550 5.1.1 The email account that you tried to reach does not exist. Please try double-checking the recipient’s email address for typos or unnecessary spaces.

i have quadruple checked everything and everything is correct from what you show in the guide, so i dont know :/

Great video bud, works like a charm for me. I have the same setup as you with Google hosting my domain and the email forwarding setup, but do you happen to know if you can set up a catch-all email address to redirect anything not having a dedicated email address to be funnelled into a single address? I’ve got a load of random ones over the years from forums/sign-ups etc that all have different *, but I don’t really want to make separate account for all of them.

Personally, I use Zoho for my custom domain for lab/home use since they gave up to 3 free mailboxes on your own domain and it most likely won’t end up in someone’s spam box, etc. The only downside is they don’t let you use it for free domains like .tk etc unless you added said domain to your account prior to them blacklisting those TLDs.

Nice! Are you using Firefly III on your Unraid server? Perhaps nice to make a video about that – have been using YNAB for a while af just set up Firefly III with its cron job.

Maybe it’s different using Google Domains to do the email forwarding. But I was doing this for years via Hover and recently email was getting bounced constantly. The Google mail servers would either reject, or delay for many hours, the forwarded message from the Hover server. Before that I would often get messages show up as SPAM and looking at the header it would show different issues that when I looked them up related to email forwarding.
So now I setup a mail server on with my webhost and just get the mail the old way via POP3, and send mail via my 3rd party SMTP. Works the same way except it takes long for mail to show up and I have to hit refresh sometimes.
I would not be surprised if Google Domains is whitelisted and handles this differently when it’s all forwarded inside their own system, but it does not work 100% when not using their services.
