DNS recursive query vs. Iterative query

DNS recursive query vs. Iterative query

The goal of DNS is to resolve a fully qualified domain name (FQDN) to an IP address. The process is called name resolution.

In this video I will use one example to demonstrate the whole process how name resolution is done. At the same time, the difference between recursive query and iterative query is explained.

So, does every device in the world makes requests to the root DNS? Doesn’t it DDOS that machine?

In most cases the local DNS server is just another stub resolver.

  29. Egel Urip on January 26, 2022 at 6:13 pm

Very clear. Thank you. My question to you is: what is my local dns in my home network? In my home network I only have a pc and router. How does the isp dns server fit into your schematic? How do I avoid the isp dns server completely so that they cannot spy on me. If I use vpn, who is making the request to resolve the domain name to an ip address? Is it my the IP address my isp assign to my modem, or my vpn ip?

Really great video, I must say!
I only have one thing to say, that host becomes before the DNS cache (if you already have something in cache, and you write same domain name in the host file, but with different ip, the computer listens to the host file first).

  45. Shekina Gracelin on January 26, 2022 at 6:32 pm
